Best Dressed – MET Ball 2014
It’s that time of year again..
Actors, models and musicians descent upon New York City to take part in one of the years most prestigious events, the MET Ball.
Hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this years ball was a gathering of celebrities and designers alike to celebrate the opening of an exhibition of the life and works of the famous British Couturier, Charles James at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s newly named ‘Anna Wintour Costume Center’.
‘Charles James: Beyond Fashion’ takes a look at the life and career of one of the 20th centuries most appreciated couturiers and an insight into his design processes as well as structural and mathematical practices employed in the creation of his most famous designs..
He is most known for his exquisite and elaborate ball gowns and dresses, so what could be a more fitting tribute to the man himself than have everyone attending this ‘White Tie’ event be in formal dress.

Everyone who is anyone attended this event with noted celebrities such as Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Ford, to Donatella Versace making an undead appearance as well as Stella McCartney and her little tribe featuring Cara Delevingne, Rihanna, Kate Bosworth and Reese Witherspoon,, all decked out in Stella’s own creations
Everyone loves a good bit of fashion and with events like this, there are always those people who go out of their way to look better than the rest. Sometimes it works and sometimes it turns into a fail of the most epic proportions.
So, without further ado, here are Handle with Cake’s Best Dressed of the 2014 MET Ball
Here are my TOP FIVE FAVORITE items of the evening:
1) Hailee Steinfeld
True Grit and Ender’s Game actress Hailee Steinfeld attended the ball wearing a lovely black and white number by Nepalese-American designer Prabal Gurung. Not satisfied with just wearing the dress, Hailee turned up sporting the designer himself on her arm as her date for the event. She also wore Charlotte Olympia shoes and jewelry by Van Cleef and Arpels. Reminiscent of Stella McCartney creations featured on previous red carpet events,, but in ballgown form? Hmmmm.
For a 17 year old starlet, she sure looked the part.
2) Rita Ora
Rita Ora dazzled the crown in a gold sequined piece by Donna Karan,, silk tuile gown and an asymmetrical sculpted train. Her boots were custom made Casadei Gladiator boots which were embroidered with antique gold sequins, courtesy of Donna Karan Atelier. She added jewelry by Lorraine Schwartz to finish the look.
3) Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen
The Olsen Twins.. always at the forefront of fashion. At this years MET Ball, Ashley wore a vintage Chanel dress whilst Mary-Kate wore another vintage piece by Ferre. Both items were from Lily et Cie vintage clothes store in Beverly Hills. Seeing as I can’t see their shoes, I don’t really know what they wore. Some people think that they are wearing real life honest to god ancient clothes, but I think the vintage look really works. It’s the kind of fashion that would have been around in the day of the honored Charles James. I think he would have approved. Maybe.
4) Katie Couric

TV host, news anchor and all round woman, Katie Couric attented the ball in a flowing gown by Angel Sanchez (thanks to Audrey for finding the designer for this non-descript black dress! I would have had no idea!) and long white gloves. One of the few people who actually stuck to the idea of ‘White Tie’. I like it. Just a shame I can’t tell who provided shoes and jewels. If you know, drop me a message and elighten me!
5) Jessica Alba

What can I say? Jessica Alba looked absolutely amazing in her vintage looking dress. She attended the event with her husband Cash Warren. Her stunning look was created by designer Diane von Furstenberg, including both the dress and clutch bag. Her shoes were by Brian Atwood and to finish off her look she had Doves by Doron Paloma jewels to add that last bit of ‘something-something’.
